Hidden in the halls of Comic-Con International in San Diego was a first time creative crossover many fans probably assumed had already happened: the first meeting between "Avatar: The Last Airbender" comics writer Gene Yang and original TV show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
Though Yang has been writing the Dark Horse Comics continuation of the popular Nickelodeon animated series for over a year, his only connection to the creators has been through phone calls. Despite that, Yang admits their work bled heavily into his own process as he and artists Gurihiru prepared the next trilogy story in their comics run, "Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Rift." "I feel really lucky to be working with them," Yang told CBR News. "They're world class storytellers and getting up close to get some insight into their process has been great to me. They tell me bits and pieces about 'The Legend of Korra,' and I try to throw in references to the bits they tell me, but I don't think there will ever be that direct of a connection. 'Korra' is its own thing."
"The Rift" continues the format set by earlier series "The Promise" and "The Search," though Yang joked that the creative team failed to shorten the title of the book as they expanded its story scope. "We talked about the 'The' part. No one was too tied to it. But the problem became that when you look at the solicitations, it's this long title. 'Avatar Colon The Last Airbender Dash The Search.' That's gigantic! We tried to keep part of it short, but even with this new one, we ended up having a 'The.'"
The new trilogy shifts its focus back to Aang and the building of Republic City -- now well known to "Legend of Korra" watchers. Though it was too early in the process to talk specifics, Yang said he was looking forward to return to some of the core "Avatar" cast after spending time away in the Fire Nation for the currently running "The Search." "That story felt like a story of the Fire Nation royal family. The core relationships are Zuko, his sister and his mom. Those are the relationships we wanted to explore all the way through, so how we thought about it was, "if these are the core relationships, how do the other characters reflect what's going on there?" That's why we only touch a little bit on things like Sokka and Katara's relationship."
In particular, the writer is aiming at a larger role for his favored cast member. "What happened to me is that as I watched the show, Zuko was my favorite character, but now that I'm writing it, it's Toph. I mean, I liked Toph before, but now I love Toph," he said. "We're trying to keep the focus on the characters. We want to talk about the world in relation to the characters, so what we learn about the world will always be filtered through their eyes. Aang and Toph will be the center of this one. I missed having Toph in 'The Search!'"
Wherever the titular rift forms amongst the comic's cast, Yang promises plenty of story movement, and is looking forward to moving the overall plot forward in a way that's slightly more substantial than the average TV episode. "I don't know if there's a one-to-one correspondence. A trilogy covers a little bit more than an episode, and each issue covers a little bit more than a segment of the show. It's kind of its own thing."
As Yang prepared the next volume, he's continuing to learn lessons from the creators he met at Comic-Con, as well as from those he hasn't yet encountered. "I think I've grown in admiration for those writers. It's amazing what they were able to do. I have to rewatch the episodes that have to do the issues I'm currently working on. Just the other day, I rewatched 'Avatar Day' episode, and it's amazing! The writer John O'Bryan -- the connections he made between the parts of the show were so deep, and it was all in 22 minutes. Shockingly good!"
Finally, while the "Avatar" comics have operated as trilogies since their start, fans shouldn't necessarily look at "The Rift" as a finale for the series' comic incarnation. "I think it will just continue," Yang said. "What Mike and Bryan wanted to do with the comic was show that the characters still had a life after that last episode, and we're going to keep going on that idea."
"Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Rift, Part 1" debuts March 5, 2014 from Dark Horse. The second volume of "The Search" is available now.

“Who is this guy? How did the most optimistic, hopeful character in the galaxy turn into this hermit who says it's time for the Jedi to end? I read that and I said, 'What?' I mean, that's not what a Jedi does.” Mark Hamill

In Part Three, Aang calls forth the Mother of Faces “who walks through the Forest once a season, and “grant[s] one favor to one human.” But the one human in line for that next favor has already been waiting far too long, and Aang justly tells Zuko, “I’m sorry … we’ll keep looking for Ursa on our own.” Of course, brash Azula has a different plan, and her greed and anger set in motion a race for the truth.
Once again, Yang leads his creative team through epic feats, not to mention including an inspired nod or two toward age-old fairy tales (Snow White with a twist) and swashbuckling myths (royal siblings-in-rivalry Zeus vs. Poseidon or Athena vs. Ares). Zuko’s personal search, not only for his beloved mother but his very identity, results in more questions than answers … which proves to actually be a very good thing, because surely that means more Avatar escapades to come!

Не на то я рассчитывал когда Катара говорила Джиноре: "It's an incredible story".

Production wrapped 5 years ago so I don't think Paramount is going to care. They know it bombed. What it came down to was M Night really was the only one who knew the show and what he was doing (the first draft of the screenplay? gorgeous. hence Bryke giving him the okay). The producers, who are actually in charge of at least 80% of production including casting.... not so much. They clearly never bothered to watch the show, nor had the ghostwriter who did the final screenplay. Nicola was hired because she's the daughter of someone one of the producers owed a favor to as Hollywood loves its nepotism. (Her audition tape was subpar at best). In having to cast her they had to cast a guy who could pass as her brother - hence Jackson. His audition was actually pretty good. He's a funny guy and had clearly seen the show. Too bad the producers felt the movie didn't have time for intentional humor and cut all that out of the script. Noah was the only one who honestly openly auditioned and was chosen based on talent. He just needed extra help acting because with a lot of it being green screened he was talking to air a lot of the time. Experienced adults have a hard time doing that let alone a kid. If you recall they initially signed on Jesse McCartney as Zuko. Why? Because otherwise the lead actor roster would be "starring: two unknown kids you never heard of and that guy who played a minor character in Twilight!". And then someone with a brain realized "wait a minute this show is kind of anime-esque and we're hiring a bunch of white kids. Um.". So what did they do? Because they couldn't can Nicola without someone being really ticked, Jesse willingly bowed out and went with another project offered at the time. Even still, they still needed a big name to draw people in but it couldn't be another white kid. Dev Patel just gave an Oscar-winning performance and was willing to sign on. And in getting him they had to make the rest of the Fire Nation match. Which is why it turned into heroic white kids VS evil brown people (which was intentionally unintentional). And then it was horribly budgeted. The opening at the SWT all nice and pretty in Greenland? Cost big bucks. And then they realized with a story about people manipulating elements that couldn't be believably done with in camera practical effects. So they had to rebudget and gave most of the money to ILM for post production. You go from the beautiful SWT to everything looking dingy because everything else was shot in Pennsylvania. The Fire Nation Royal Palace? An old high school in Philadelphia. Parts of the Earth Kingdom (including Kyoshi Island which got cut)? Reading, PA. And everything that was the NWT.... some sets built in front of giant green screens in an old emptied aircraft hangar in the outskirts of Philadelphia. Yeah. And ILM was rushed despite most of the movie's look being left up to them. And you had novice directors hired by producers to oversee that process. That's how come the pebble dance happened. Sadly at that point M Night was just tired of arguing with the overheads, gave up, and collected his paycheck. If you look at the movie's premiere and red carpet footage you can tell his excitement and happiness is fake. Bryke had little say in the film despite being listed as executive producers. That title was a fancy way of saying that they created the show it was based on and they're still alive so they need some kind of nice credit. The actual producers didn't know what they were dealing with and were only interested in a quick buck. Bryke and M Night gave up on the film around the same time for same reasons. The other people working on the film were a pain to deal with and Nickelodeon themselves only wanted the final product as quickly as possible and the money it would presumably make them. At least they hired good caterers. The food was great on that set.
